ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER SORT OF EXHIBITION: TESSELLATING TILES!

Following on from last year when Linell Designs and Xenmint Photography joined forces to exhibit together, this year they have literally amalgamated their art and photography. The result is this:

Chinese brush painting pictures reproduced as ceramic tiles, and border tiles tessellated from a Xenmint photo of Well's Cathedral roof.
We hand-printed our own works of art onto tiles, and are very happy with the result.

Waterpostman - Chinese brush painting

The tiles are durable for ordinary domestic use, just need wiping with soapy solution to clean. They can be installed just like shop tiles to enhance your walls with unique designs. We don't do the install, that is best done by a tiler or DIY enthusiast.

Now, the clever bit....
If you are an artist reading this, and you want to immortalise your own work, we can do it for you. All we need is a good quality photo. We will tell you if it isn't good enough for reproduction before starting the process.

Socially, it was a great couple of days as long as you were under cover. We were. Warned by various weather apps, we bought a great gazebo and had a regular footfall at The Old Lockup. This was probably owing to the really loud bands, beer, and bonhomie. Nothing like a bit of hostile weather to bring us Brits into cosy contact, huddled up together for warmth. Our gazebo did good work sheltering beer & music-lovers as well as our products, and those of Shop Reddish, next stall along. It sported a plethora of unique wooden items, from cheese knives to chopping boards.

We were selling hand-painted ceramic coasters and ceramic place-mats/tiles. We found people liked to PICK N MIX their choice of tiles, making up their own sets. And who are we to argue?
It made a cheerful display on a miserable day, and attracted plenty of hunters for Xmas gifts. The hand-painted coasters sold for £6 for 4 & £10 for 6 (We were told they were far too cheap, but this was a market, not a shop.) And the 8" square tiles went for £10 each, or a set of 4 for £36. Stoneware mugs were £5 and China mugs £6.

We were encouraged to think this is a great start to a new business.
I've been working on it for about 10 years, alternating with painting, but this year I stopped painting, finalised the book, and drew the pictures for each chapter. There's a sequel to be written as well, so that's my plan for the rest of 2017 into 2018
If you like a page-turner, this will keep your hands busy. It's a fast-moving adventure, action never stops, and the heroes and heroines are very human, full of flaws, but also humour. Each character goes on a personal journey as they try to understand what's happening, and help unravel some injustices done years earlier.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Perfect timing for a spot of Xmas shopping....
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'll be exhibiting 6 pictures created using encaustic wax. At our gazebo at Art in the Gardens in September so many people enjoyed being able to touch the wax as well as look at the images. They have a surprising strength, whilst looking so fragile. I'm not sure if the organisers of the GSAS will encourage touching pictures: just tell them it's OK by me ;-)
I shared a gazebo with Xenmint Art Photography and our space was rammed to the rafters with colourful art.- possibly far too much - but hey, it cheered up a gloomy day of solid rain.It started fine and bright but as the show opened at 10.30 the first drops began to fall. By 12.30 it had set in for the day and the paying public sensibly decided they would all wait for Sunday. I suspect Social Media had passed the word around because even the big marquees were empty of punters. One dragon painting went to a drenched friend who probably has pneumonia by now. Bless her.

Sunday was more like it. The rain had mostly gone, a breeze blew up and we soon learned the art of weighting down the waterproof items on our front table, aluminium prints, mugs, coasters etc.
The Gardens came alive during the morning with families and art lovers filling up their carrier bags. As one lady put it, "What's not to like for a girl with a credit card?" Fortunately for us the event organisers had a card facility which I was lucky enough to visit three times during the afternoon. And best of all I sold a big fantasy mural painted on coarse chipboard- "Nightflight"

just half an hour before the gates shut. Very pleased the buyer liked it so much! Quite a bit of soul-wrestling going on there for a while as she paced up and down, but she bit the bullet at last.
Mutual satisfaction I hope. Although, I have to add that a young man from the next door gazebo was very disappointed as he'd been trying to persuade his Nan to buy it for him!

Sometimes September comes in like a lamb, this year it was a bit Lionesque. If it had been wet two days in a row, I doubt we'd have broken even, but Fate or Paul Hudson the Weatherman and a charming Irish girl smiled, and we got lucky.
Would we do it again? Ask me next year!
Below are a couple of my new Encaustic Wax paintings that seemed to be of interest. People like the feel of the wax. and enjoyed being able to actually touch a painting. Half the fun of wax is its tactile qualities.
Sharing a Gazebo in the Botanical Gardens, Sheffield

There's a first time for everything. Art in the Gardens is my favourite show. Wonderful setting, great day out, and now I get to exhibit with Xenmint Art Photography, in our own gazebo. Sounds like a date in heaven!

Some paintings were accepted into the Open Art Exhibition in the main tent:
I'll have room to display some images in a new medium I've been experimenting with: encaustic wax. Most of this work I am preparing for the Great Sheffield Show later in the year, but this is a great opportunity to get feedback from visitors. As those who've seen my paintings before will know, I really like textures that have an almost 3D look and feel to them. It was one of the things that drew me to work on coarse chipboard, and I am loving the layering, the depth, and the physical feel of this new material. If you've painted with it, you'll know how much fun it is - I hope the pieces I will be showing meet with your approval!

If you are a woman, and live in Bolsover, and you haven't yet joined your local WI get your tapping finger out and either dial or email for a 2015 programme of events. Am I predjudiced? You bet.

I was there, saw how this bunch of all ages responded to my hasty instructions on how paint with glass paints on a variety of surfaces. We only had an hour to make beautiful art, but you can see for yourselves how well they did, mostly with no prior experience in this art.
With one hour in which to achieve the almost impossible, the ladies were off with their tubes of black, silver or gold outliner, either tracing or drawing their own designs, or using mine. Then, a quick blast with a hairdryer to make sure the outliner didn't run into the colours soon to fill these sections. There was a wide variety of artefacts to decorate: glassware, tiles, mirrors and picture frames, everyone had brought something to upgrade or transform, and there was surprisingly little squabbling over the paint pots. Ah the joys of adulthood!

I've duplicated the single tiles to show how easy it is to either make heatproof mats for your table, or decorate the tiles in kitchens and bathrooms. It doesn't matter at all if lines are shaky, the individual touch makes the tiles look like expensive Italian imports!
Using an ordinary picture frame, picked up for nuppence, just paint on the glass and back it with white paper.
You can trace your own design and it will look fabulous on your bathroom wall.
Yes, it is waterproof, (not dishwasher proof) You can tart up the frame too with glass paint if it needs a bit of extra gloss.

Glassware looks stunning with painted motifs when the light shines through. Bear in mind if upgrading your wine glasses, that the colour of the wine will change the colour of the design. You can always try it out whilst painting, to just make sure you've got it just right!
This orchid is a fresh and unusual approach with no outline at all. Part of its charm is the fact that it looks 'Primitive', but if the artist wasn't wanting that effect, she could always add another coat of paint.

There are no rules in glass painting. The black, silver or gold outliner usually used is just a leftover from the traditional method of making stained glass windows, using lead to join chunks of coloured glass. I have used glass paints to decorate a whole Chapel of Rest for St Luke's Hospice in Plymouth at a fraction of the cost of real stained glass. There are times when its good to cut corners and keep precious money for other more important things.

Not the Farmer's Market, nor the Saturday Market, from very single shop that used to sell them. They suddenly vanished. And back then the internet was only a speck in the distant ethers. With these versatile paints I had built a little business installing stained glass designs without having to remove windows The St Luke's Hospice chapel in Plymouth commissioned a fourteen foot wall of glass painted wisteria. Stained glass would have cost them thousands. My designs were made at home on fifty sheets, and installed in a single day. Things were looking up. But now the paints were withdrawn, sadly, so were my services. Then,14 years later, peelable paints came back. So here I am picking up the sticky threads. Starting with glass panels beside a doorway in a house called The Lilacs.
Yes, it is easier to paint on horizontal glass, but people don't always have the money or inclination to remove their windows. And I'm happy to accomodate and adapt to the budget of those who want a bit of interest or colour in their homes or businesses.
Looking forward to 2015!
Sounds like the sort of TV challenge I can't resist.Where is your natural caution when you need it? In my defence I was running a temperature when asked to perform this feat - my normal reason not just impaired but on holiday, With no sense except the desire to sneeze, snooze and snuggle up, I cheerfully said, Yes I can do that! At this point happily assuming it would be a two hour slot. It seemed a bit churlish to withdraw the offer once the single allotted hour was mentioned. And there is no doubt it will be a bit of fun, and a also bit of a mad gallop, but the Bolsover Women are made of sterling stuff. We will succeed|
Should I invite the Guinness Book of Records with stopwatches?

My first befuddled thought was, We'll use peelable glass paints. Second thought, two days later with brain more or less re-assembled: Are you totally mad? It takes 24 hours to dry! So waterbased glass paints it is. Two hairdryers to fix the outliner, and then pretty much whacking in the colour before our time is up and we all turn into pumpkins.

If all goes to plan, the Famous Bolsover 40 will turn up bearing little picture frames, a water pot and some paper towel - possibly they might have constructed a little WI flag with this kit if they bring a paintbrush as well. Some may even have made their own design for that picture frame. Failing that, they'll have to make do with mine.
I am fascinated to see if it can be done in 60 mins.
Of course it can! And the proof will be up here next week.
WI's Honour!
Chesterfield Art Club turned out in strength for a session of Mini Mural Painting. More used to watercolour paper and canvas, chipboard was a challenge. Allowing a rectangle of chipboard to lead, and expecting an artist to follow it is a bit of a tall order. But everyone managed it, some even enjoyed the element of surprise such a radical medium brought. Some found it liberating playing with paint again in a way they hadn't done for years;
The surface of OSB [ to the trade], common or garden hoarding to you and me, is just the stuff to inspire you into realms of imagination. I paint one side of the board in white acrylic, leave the other side raw. You may want to use either, or both sides.

First, there is no right or wrong way to paint chipboard.

Second, there is no right or wrong medium to use on it.

Third, you cannot fail because there is no gold standard.

Armed with these thoughts, you can be bold, crazy, or conservative. You can paint the smallest mural in the world, or take up a whole wall. But we will start with smallish boards just to get the hang of what to look for, what to develop. I usually start with sketching the outlines of what I can see. You might not. You might decide to ignore the textured surface altogether and impose an idea you have in your head onto it.

You can bring your own paints/inks/brushes/ pastels etc, or I will provide some. If you want to look at another example of Mini Murals, check out Jan 14th 2011 below to see what some other total novices produced.

This year I'm in The Conservatory in Queen's Park, Boythorpe Avenue, Chesterfield S402BF.
Also exhibiting are Elizabeth Forrest, papermaker and lettering, Carol Eason, painter, & Wendy Diprose, painter.

I'll have on show all the work I did at Chesterfield College during the 6 months Residency which ended in April, plus some other new work and prints, cards and even mugs. There will be plenty going on in Queen's Park over the weekend, so come along and join in the fun, funfair, Big Picnic - sounds a bit David Cameronish, but no doubt there will be lots of food, loaves, fishes, now known as burgers,[ not to be confused with Burghers.]
Since it is hard to spot a flag anywhere in Chesterfield for the Jubilee, I suspect that at least 90% of them will be in the park. Welcome all, and look forward to seeing you there.
The large mural has worked out well, with meddling man and woman in Unseen Influences. It happened around a lot of rather helpless feeling towards those who meddle in our lives...currently bankers and financiers, previously, beguiling women. The experimental fingers and toes poking gently at the water just to see what effect their ripples make. I did at one time fit the man with a bowler and tie, but decided to take that idea onto another piece of work. Hence Home Sapiens Oblivia, so absorbed in his newspaper he can't see himself as we do. This involves 100 hours of working at the college until April/May next year. The idea is to be available to the students so they can ask questions about our works, working practices etc. For them, a small window on what it is like to be a working artist, and for us a chance to share some of what we know, and no doubt learn a lot from them. A short intro to the students on Nov 24 will start the process, and then each of us will set up our work in one of the studios and begin.
For me, this is a wonderful opportunity to undertake a large mural on coarse chipboard, [OSB] something I can't fit into my studio at home. Ideas buzzing about how to carry this out, then how to carry it elsewhere...
The board I have in mind is 6' x8' [ or Length: 2440mm Width: 1220mm].
Ah, jigsaws......
Literally.
The mechanics of this are part of the exploration of my chosen material. I am really looking forward to starting since my pictures invariably end up quite different from what I begin with. I will be writing a blog for the college, and will link it to this site.Linell Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18346175805729073819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1439255937265152.post-25777490012752230972011-07-28T05:59:00.000-07:002011-07-28T06:07:13.776-07:00BAKEWELL ART SHOW AUG SAT 6, SUN 7 MON 8th
Chesterfield Art Club is holding its annual art show at Bakewell Town Hall this year.
